Heat and Drought Affecting Our Woods
08.03.2012

Enjoy a hike in the cool morning or early evening along the trails of Fugate Woods, Bluestem Trail and Fugate Woods Nature Preserve! The drought and heat present the opportunity to experience it's effects on the prairie and woodland habitats.

The cyclical dry events through the centuries indicate the underlying conditions that contribute to a dominance of grassland over woodland throughout vast prairie regions of the Midwest. Exposed creek bottoms, a preponderance of prairie forbs over uncharacteristically short grasses, leaf-strewn woodland trails provide ample bits of wonder as heron footprints in the mud, delicate butterflies and the winged flight of raptor and early migrations suggest Fall might well come early this year.
